Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that this was not the best venue for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt, applied and won a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford was not able to finish her studies until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
